Sainsbury’s started out in 1869, with the first store selling butter, milk and eggs, with the second store opening up in 1873 and finally in 1890 a head office and warehouse were set up close to markets and the docks. In 1900 the opening of Sainsbury’s first country branch sounds the horn for a new era of expansion. 1903 sees the introduction of tea coffee and sugar with Sainsbury’s still selling its red label tea today. The introduction of electric lighting started in 1905 with the new stores and by 1914 all of the stores had been upgraded with electricity.
Sainsbury’s see off the First World War and continues to expand opening a training school for women so that they will be able to fill the gap left by the men off fighting. By 1920 Sainsbury’s introduces a full range of grocery items, with many of them carrying the Sainsbury’s brand making them cheaper than other brands bought in.

Sainsbury’s continues to grow and in 1950 inspired by American supermarkets Sainsbury’s introduces self service to the British public. The first non grocery items start to make their way into Sainsbury’s store in 1961, paving the way for what you see today.
